2023 Educator of the Year Award

Cindy Brewer

Cindy Brewer, a social studies teacher at St. John Neumann High School in Collier County, has created strong interest in world affairs in her students. The award was presented at NCWA's Annual Dinner wrapping up events for the season.

At her school, Cindy has done the following:

  • won two third place awards at National High School Model UN in New York City last year and a third and first place award this year.
  • won recognition at GatorMUN this year.
  • facilitated many Zoom conversations by her students with students in Ukraine through our NCWA supported Move Ukraine effort.
  • assisted her students in preparing podcasts to share with students in Ukraine.
  • helped a St. John Neumann student to be selected for the NCWA School Outreach scholarship.  He will be attending Oxford.
  • brought students to NCWA lectures at Moorings Presbyterian Church and helped her students attend more NCWA events.

NCWA hopes that Cindy will be one of the key teachers to support our new Global Scholar Columbus
Scholarship Columbus Program where students will be able to gain knowledge and certification in global affairs online in a three-year program.

Cindy was exposed to many international hot spots early in her life when she sang in an a capella group that traveled to North Korea (1987), the Soviet Union (1988), Yugoslavia (1989), and many other locales.

The School Outreach Committee gives the Louis H. Kuhn Award annually to an educator who has contributed significantly to the Council’s mission of “educate, inspire and engage” at the middle and high school levels of the community. The award is named in honor of the late Mr. Kuhn, who was a long-time member and volunteer on the Council and the Outreach Committee.

Educators wishing to nominate a colleague for this award, which includes a plaque and an honorarium, should submit a nomination form to the Council. Nominations are due March 1, 2024.
