The Naples Council on World Affairs is pleased to present a talk by David Rohde, a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter for the New York Times who was kidnapped by the Taliban near Kabul in November, 2008. After seven months of captivity in North Waziristan, Rohde and an associate managed to escape, by lowering themselves by a rope from their cell while their captors were asleep, climbing a wall, and making their way to a nearby Pakistani Frontier Corps base where they were then flown to the American air base in Bagram.

Rohde and his wife Kristen Mulvihill have recently co-authored a book about this experience, titled A Rope and A Prayer, copies of which David will sign following his talk. Doris Kearns Goodwin has called this book “simultaneously a thrilling narrative, a brilliant look at the war in Afghanistan, a meditation on journalism and a moving love story.”

David Rohde has covered the conflicts in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Israel-Palestine, and the Balkans. He is also the author of “Endgame: The Betrayal and Fall of Srebrenica, Europe’s Worst Massacre Since World War II” (Farrar, Straus & Giroux 1997).He will speak at St. John the Evangelist’s Kiney Hall,[ the location for our Monday lecture series] at 625 111th Ave. at 10:00 A.M. on Friday, January 28, and will answer questions about his experience following his talk.
