The Naples Council on World Affairs

will welcome

Graeme Wood
Monday, March 7, 2016

St. John the Evangelist’s Kiney Hall

625 111th Avenue No. North Naples

3:45 pm and 7:30 pm

"The Islamic State group seized large parts of Iraq and Syria in 2014, and it quickly established that it intended more than just the capture of a few scattered cities and the deserts between them. Graeme Wood will discuss the group's plans for conquest and how it has attracted tens of thousands of men and women, young and old, to its cause." Will the Caliphate succeed?

Graeme Wood writes for The Atlantic magazine. His March 2015 Atlantic cover story on ISIS (“What ISIS Really Wants”) detailed that group’s apocalyptic ideology and origins as a radical splinter of Al Qaida. In the first ten days after its debut, the story became the most-read article in the magazine’s history.

Wood started in journalism at the age of 19 as a reporter for The Cambodia Daily. He has written for The New Yorker, Foreign Policy, The Wall Street Journal, and The New York Times, and he has appeared on CNN, the BBC, ABC, NBC, Al Jazeera, and the CBC.  He studied philosophy and languages at Harvard and The American University in Cairo, and is a lecturer in POLITICAL SCIENCE at Yale.
