Just back from reporting in the Middle East, New York Times United Nations Bureau Chief Neil MacFarquhar discusses the most recent developments of the ongoing Arab awakening. Neil MacFarquhar served as New York Times Cairo Bureau chief from 2001-2005 and went on to become its United Nations bureau chief. His Mideast expertise predates his Cairo assignment: he grew up in Libya and covered the region for the AP, including stints in Israel and Kuwait. He is fluent in both French and Arabic and is the author of The Media Relations Department of Hizbollah Wishes You a Happy Birthday : Unexpected encounters in a Changing Middle East and a novel, The Sand Café.
