Naples Council on World Affairs
"Promoting Global Understanding"
Experiment in International Living

The mission of the Summer Outreach program is to provide opportunities for high school students to participate in overseas programs to expand their understanding of world cultures and international affairs. The primary goals of this scholarship program include:

  • Enriching students' understanding of other cultures
  • Increasing students' awareness of the diversity of global customs and needs
  • Motivating and rewarding high-performing students and their teachers
  • Developing students' self-confidence, communication skills, critical thinking and social skills
  • Developing  language skills
  • Providing opportunities to make a difference through community service activities in other countries and at home.

For summer study overseas, the Council cooperates with The Experiment in International Living (EIL), based in Brattleboro, Vt. EIL is an organization which gives high school students the unique, possibly life-changing, opportunity to enrich themselves and the world around them by offering 3 to 5 week programs in 30 countries around the world.  The summer of 2011, the council offered generous scholarships and financial aid toward the cost of these programs to 7 qualified local high school students.

Students seeking scholarships are asked to first refer to Expectation of Student Return Activity agreement in Important Documents and Forms below, outlining the expectations the Council has of students after having participated in one of these programs, and then must complete one of the summer study applications by the date indicated on the appropriate application, and be interviewed by members of the Council Outreach Committee.

The NCWA will continue to offer current sophomores to participate in the application process for EIL study abroad program. If approved, the students will travel to their selected country as rising seniors.

Juniors applying for the EIL 2012 summer travel, as well as sophomores planning for 2013, must complete the "Experiment in International Living Information Page" provided in the 2012 NCWA Experiment in International Living Scholarship Application form under Important Documents and Forms below. After students are approved by the NCWA Outreach Committee, the official EIL application form will be published on this web site.

The deadline for applications for the EIL program is Feb. 20, 2012.
