Enemies Into Friends: How Peace Breaks Out

Dr. Charles Kupchan will return to Naples on Monday, December 6th to address this topic and “How the US Can Court Its Adversaries” which appeared in the March/April issue of “Foreign Affairs”. He will speak at St. John the Evangelist’s Kiney Hall at 625 111th Avenue, at 3:45 and 7:30pm.

In his inaugural address, U.S. President Barack Obama informed those regimes “on the wrong side of history” that the United States “will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist”. “The jury is still out on whether this strategy is bearing fruit”. Dr. Kupchan believes that the “source of stable peace” comes from our efforts to turn “Enemies Into Friends”. We will look forward to his opinions on this promising topic.

Charles Kupchan is an Associate Professor of International Relations in the School of Foreign Service and Government Department at Georgetown University. He is also a Senior Fellow and Director of Europe Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations.

Mr. Kupchan was Director for European Affairs on the National Security Council during the first Clinton administration. Before joining the NSC, he worked in the U.S. Department of State on the Policy Planning Staff.

Mr. Kupchan received a B.A. from Harvard University and M.Phil. and D.Phil. degrees from Oxford University.
