Sarah Chayes provides an inside look at the former Taliban stronghold, after the biggest operation by international troops in the 9-year Afghan War. Assistant to General David McKiernan, ISAF Commander, Ms. Chayes has lived in Kandahar since 2002, is a former NPR and Christian Science Monitor reporter, and author of, The Punishment of Virtue.

Dr. Charles Kupchan's newest book gives a formula for the United States to court its adversaries. Kupchan is the Senior Fellow in European Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations, and Professor of International Affairs at Georgetown University. He also served as Director of International Affairs at the National Security Council during the Clinton Administration.

Islam's Synergy with American Democracy
Dr. Zuhdi Jasser is Chairman of the American Islamic Forum for Democracy, and a former US Navy physician. He is willing to challenge the insidious threat of political Islam, and is a staunch advocate of the separation of mosque and state. Dr. Jasser received his honorable discharge in 1999 as a Lieutenant Commander and is a recipient of the Meritorious Service Medal.

The North Korean Dilemma
Current events support the very dilemma Dr. Victor Cha will address. As Director of Asian Studies at Georgetown University, Dr. Cha travels regularly to South Korea and was a member of the six party talks as US Deputy Head of the Delegation. He was snowed out last February for his lecture to the Council.

Ms. Kellie Meiman is Managing Director for the international practice of McLarty Associates, in Washington, DC. For the past ten years, her responsibilities have focused on Brazil and adjacent South American countries. Ms. Meiman served as a Foreign Service officer with the U.S. Department of State, and is a Member of the Council on Foreign Relations Task Force on Latin America.

Prof. F. Warren McFarlan is the Albert H. Gordon Professor of Business Administration Emeritus at the Harvard Graduate School of Business. A frequent traveler to China, he is co-author of the book, Seizing Strategic IT Advantage in China. He is well placed to give us an overview of Chinas economic future and its effect on the US.

Ms. Trudy Rubin is the foreign affairs columnist for the Philadelphia Inquirer, and a member of the Inquirer's Editorial Board. In 2008, she was awarded the Edward Weintal award for International Reporting. Ms. Rubin has special expertise on the Middle East, and is a frequent traveler to the region.

Peter Singer is the Director of the 21st Century Defense Initiative, and a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution. His research focuses on three core issues: the future of war, current US defense needs and future priorities, and the future of the US Defense System. He was recently named one of the Top 100 Global Thinkers of 2009 by Foreign Policy Magazine.
